As one of the most recently established bowls clubs in the northern area of Melbourne, Kingsbury bowls club has quickly founded a reputation as a club of quality. The contribution of voluntary labour by members has resulted in the excellent facilities for which bowlers can enjoy.
The club was founded in 1978 and bowled at the nearby Moreland Bowls Club until the 1st green was installed in 1981. The 2nd green was built a couple of years later, and by the 1990s there were 3 greens in usage by the club.
The club got its name, like the area next door from a local WWII hero, Private Kingsbury.
Kingsbury Bowls Club is a working man’s and woman’s club, located in a predominantly middle class area north of the CBD.
The club is currently home to 300 bowlers, 180 of which are men and 120 ladies. This equates to 6 mens and 4 ladies teams in pennant competition.
In 2005 the club hosted the Trans-Tasman Championship.
During the Melbourne Commonwealth Games, Kingsbury also hosted the competing teams’ practise sessions.
Having recently been relegated to 2nd division after a poor season, the mens 1st side won the pennant title and was promoted back into 1st division.
Having successfully hosted the Trans-Tasman event and Commonwealth Games practise in recent years, Kingsbury Bowls Club has made a name for itself as a professionally run club with some impressive facilities.
