Looking around at Glen Waverley Bowls Club, it’ shard not to notice the impressive facilities – and it’s almost all managed by members on a voluntary basis.
The club was founded in 1974 and whilst the greens were being built the club members bowled at nearby Clayton Bowls Club.
The club is the co-largest club in metropolitan Melbourne with 450 bowling members made up of 250 men, 150 ladies and 50 indoor bowlers.
At the beginning of the 2006-2007 season Glen Waverley Bowls Club unveiled a new club flag which has a more modern design and now includes the club’s colours.
The club is home to 3 excellent bent greens and a brand new synthetic green installed in October that was funded by club members and support from the State Government and Monash council.
Other events hosted at the club included the Australian Sides Competition, ladies round robin, a Seniors Week event and a vision impaired bowlers day. The clubs greens were also used for practise in 2006 by the Malaysian Commonwealth Games team.
Glen Waverley Bowls Club is involved with local schools and hosts a few ‘try bowls’ days each year, which are helped promoted by a stand at The Glen shopping centre staffed by volunteers.
There is a strong emphasis on volunteers at this club. Club members volunteer their services to cater for events, service the bar, manage indoor and outdoor facilities, and promote the club and the game to the wider public. And with no poker machines in sight, all expenses are funded by financial support from members and the local business community.
Here at Glen Waverley, it’s the excellent on-green facilities that most impress, and it’s gratifying to note that, apart from the greens, everything else at the club is managed by volunteers.
